The parts required to install a winch are very simple. There is a winch, a battery, wires and metal plate. The metal plate is the part on which the winch is onboarded and mounted to your vehicle. Usually winches do not come with a battery and battery pack. Always buy a battery pack to keep the battery so that you can mount it on any part of the vehicle.
Every winch comes with an instruction manual. Depending on your model, you can figure out the placement for the winch. Once that is done ensure that you have your tools ready. You will need proper nuts and bolts and set of tools. A lot of people wield the mounting plate onto their vehicle for a better grip but bolts do the same work if put properly.
First you will need to install the metal plate on the desired placement. You will need to screw it tightly and carefully such that it has a really strong grip and it is securely placed without any chance of it coming out. Once that is done you need to move forward to placing the winch on top and securing that.
After you have boarded the winch on the metal plate, you need to screw it tightly. You need to ensure that the placement is right and easily accessible when you want to use the winch and at the same time should be firm enough to not get affected if the vehicle is on road.

Always unwind the wire from the crank and test if your winch is working. This also helps in pretensioning the wire and stretching it out completely before using it for actual action. All you need to do is, tie the wire around some heavy weight object, only as heavy as the winch can take, and unspooling the wire. Once that is done, you need to start the winch and ensure that it is working and getting wind without being tangled. You can do it a couple of times to ensure that your winch is working without any fail and effectively.

Using a winch, a vehicle can raise or tow heavy objects, such as boats. If the winch motor isn't working properly, the winch may lose power, slow down or stop working. Winch issues are also sometimes related to the winch solenoid. Assuming the winch solenoid has been tested and isn't the problem, you should test the winch motor. Before you test the winch motor, you must put it into free spool and remove its power source. Putting it into free spool varies, but you typically use the clutch to do so. In fact, a smaller jumper cable, about 6 to 8 inches in length, tends to work best for this part of the job, as there's less cable that can get tangled.
The process for powering the winch motor for this test is similar to jumping a car battery, as you hook one end of a jumper cable up to the battery and another end to the winch motor post labeled "F2." This powers the winch using the battery. If the winch motor is good, the winch should spin in one direction as long as it has power. If the winch shorts instead of spinning, spins sluggishly or makes odd noises, the winch motor is bad. Remove the jumper cable from the winch motor after testing it.
Take the jumper wire that's connecting the "A" and "F1" posts, and switch it so it's now connecting the "A" and "F2" posts. Hook up the jumper cable to the battery and the "F1" post to repeat the testing procedure. If the motor fails the test on either post, it has gone bad and could stop working or have a decreased towing capacity. Typically, when a winch motor fails, the most effective solution is buying a new motor to replace it.
